Daily Challenge: Room 3s request: Countdown Game for all Ages

Here is a chance to play a version of the classic Countdown Game.

The challenge is to use the numbers available and the four standard operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to hit the target.

Start by choosing any six cards. The top row always contains the numbers 25, 50, 75 and 100, and the bottom row contains the numbers 1 to 10. Alternatively you could click on "Quickstart". Then click on "Generate new target" and the computer will choose a target.

You can only use each card once in your solution, and it is always possible to find a solution.

You may like to explore different levels of the game using the Settings menu (the purple cog).

Daily Challenge: How will you prove your choice?

Daily Challenge 19/11/2021: Lunar Eclipse (the moon will turn a bright red).

New Zealand stargazers will be in for a treat tonight.

New Zealanders will be able to see a rare lunar spectacle, not seen in our sky in more than 800 years.

The process will start with the shadow of the Earth moving across the moon’s face. It will be 97% covered with shadow by 10pm.

At that moment, the lunar surface will briefly turn red. The near-total eclipse will finish its three-and-a-half-hour journey just prior to midnight.

Nasa will livestream the event or you can watch it a a better time as it will be happening very late tonight.

Question:

Can you research and find out what else happened 800 years ago?  Can find any other times you see the number 800 in your world?

Daily Challenge: How many ants could carry you?

Ants are famous for being strong: a leafcutter ant can carry 50 times its own weight! Of course, an ant weighs only 1/200th of a gram at most. So that big ant can carry only about 1/4 gram.

Luckily, there are lots of ants to help out: scientists think there are about 1 million trillion ants on Earth, or one quintillion — and that together they weigh the same as all of us humans!

Questions:

1. If 4 ants can pick up a 1-gram paper clip, how many ants does it take to pick up 4 paper clips?

2. If you carried a truck that weighed 50 times your weight, how heavy would that be? (You can round off your weight to the nearest multiple of 10 if you like.)

3. If we round off that it takes 1,000 ants to carry 1 kilo, how many ants does it take to carry you?

Daily Challenge: Do you want to be a scientist for the Auckland Zoo and help collate information?

All you have to do is go out and see what birds you can spot - we’ve even made a cheat sheet with 20 common birds to help you out ‘in the field’. It only takes 5 minutes, and the data that YOU collect can help identify species distribution, ecosystem health and much more

Click the orange links to help you.

Instructions

You will need:

  1. A timer
  2. A survey sheet (click here for ours or make your own)
  3. Auckland Zoo's Common NZ birds print out (optional)
  4. Camera (to take photos of any birds you dont recognise)
Send your surveys to the Auckland Zoo and tell me all about it.

Daily Challenge: Making an analogue clock to help tell the minutes.

Watch this clip to make an analogue clock using two paper plates.  It is a great way to read minutes past the hour and minutes to the next hour.

Send me a picture of your clock.
